Illinois, Duke to Meet in Finals of Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship
BALL GROUND, Ga. – Fourth-seeded Illinois and 10th seeded Duke both claimed their semifinal matches to advance to the finals of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.

Illinois needed late heroics for the second-straight round when Mason Jacobs outlasted Texas Tech’s Will Griffin to give the Illini a 3-2 victory.

“That was why I wanted to come to this tournament - every match is going to be tight,” said Illinois Head Coach Mike Small. “Very seldom is the match a blowout. You’ve seen that in the records over the years. Now this year we had one in our first round, which was nice and we could pile on, but when you play only counting five guys and only 18 holes it’s going to be tight.”

Chris DeForest struck first for Illinois, winning his match 5 and 4. Texas Tech responded by claiming the next two matches with 3 and 2 victories by Nils Floren and Chandler Rusk. The Red Raiders looked to be in good position to win the team match with Griffin holding a two-hole advantage over Jacobs with four holes remaining. Jacobs birdied No. 18 (his 15th hole of the round) - and won No. 3 with par to move the match to all square. Jacobs and Griffin then waited on the No. 3 green to hear the results of the Luke Guthrie-Matt Smith match to see if they would continue to extra holes. After Guthrie’s win pushed Illinois into a 2-2 tie, Jacobs and Griffin moved to the fourth tee. Both players birdied the first playoff hole before Jacobs closed the match with birdie on the par-3 No. 5.

“It was pretty awesome to go birdie-birdie and make those two putts with the team there and everything,” said Jacobs. “It was one of my best golf moments, I know that. To get into the championship too, that was pretty cool.”

Duke continued its hot play by winning the first two matches of its 3-1-1 win against Southern California. Wes Roach was the first Blue Devil to put a point on the board when he downed Steve Lim 4 and 3. Julian Suri followed with a 3 and 2 victory. Jeffrey Kang picked up the Trojans lone victory, 1-up, against Tim Gornik. Duke’s Austin Cody and Sam Smith halved their match. Brinson Paolini closed out the scoring with a 2-up triumph. Duke has run its individual records to 12-2-1 for the tournament.

“I’ve got to give credit to Austin Cody - he actually didn’t lose one,” said Duke Head Coach Jamie Green. “We’re 12-2-1. That all square (in Cody’s match) I think exemplifies how the guys have won their matches. They’re just being determined. There’s a fine line when you get a bad break or the other guy makes a putt on you or whatever, you talk about being patient but you can’t be passive. I think the guys have been assertive and confident and determined and just played great golf.”

In other results, Texas A&M downed UCLA, 3-1-1; Georgia Tech beat East Tennessee State, 3-0-2; Georgia swept Pacific, 5-0; Iowa handled Alabama, 4-1; South Carolina defeated Baylor, 4-1; and Washington State outlasted Texas, 3-2.

Final-round matches will begin Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Duke Wins Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship
BALL GROUND, Ga. – Duke continued its dominant run through the bracket, downing Illinois, 4-1, to claim the team title at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.

Austin Cody provided the first points for the Blue Devils, posting a 5 and 4 victory. Chris DeForest would respond by downing Tim Gornik, 3 and 2, to pull Illinois even in the team standings. Julian Suri claimed a 3 and 1 victory to put Duke back in the lead and Brinson Paolini clinched the win with a 2 and 1 triumph. Wes Roach closed out the scoring for the Blue Devils with a 1-up victory.

“Obviously you’ve got to go hats off to the teams that we were playing,” said Duke Head Coach Jamie Green. “They’re very good. There are no easy wins out here. At the same time, I think that says a lot about our guys because they did play hard, they played well, great practice rounds, terrific notes and they were ready for anything. It’s still about having a good plan and hitting good golf shots. You’re just counting them differently. How these guys played down the stretch, that mindset is really what you want to have every time you are playing a stroke-play event. You’re fearless out there and you’re determined and committed and I think that’s the only way they win close matches in the end. If you can do that for 54 holes and get into the top eight and play some match play (at the NCAA Championships) I like our chances. We’ve built some confidence and now the guys know what they can do.”

Duke posted a Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship record 16-3-1 mark in its individual matches. Brinson Paolini and Julian Suri both went 4-0 while Austin Cody was undefeated at 3-0-1.

Elsewhere in the bracket, Southern California claimed third place by beating Texas Tech, 4-1; Georgia Tech downed Texas A&M, 3-2, for fifth place; UCLA won the seventh-place match, 3-2, over East Tennessee State; Iowa defeated Georgia, 3-1-1, for ninth place; Pacific placed 11th after winning 4-0-1 against Alabama; South Carolina outlasted Washington State, 3-1-1 for 13th; and Texas beat Baylor, 4-1, in the 15th-place match.
