Format

The Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship is a 16-team Match Play event played over the course of three days (four rounds).  The modified team match play format means that each team will play a match during each of the four rounds of competition.  You can see the tournament bracket on the bracket page of the website.  The announced seeding of the 16 teams will take place 3/14/12.

Each team match will consist of five individual matches that will determine the team that wins each match.  For example, if Team A wins three individual matches and Team B two, Team A will be named the winner of the team match.  Details on match scoring are as follows:

Match Started/Match Completed

Each team match will be comprised of five singles matches, using USGA match play scoring.  Each singles match winner will be awarded one point.  Matches tied/halved will be awarded ½ point.  The team match score will be determined by totaling the points for the five singles matches.  The team with the most points will be the winner.

Team Matches Tied

For match play rounds 1 and 2 team matches that are tied will be decided by using the following procedure:

  • If a singles match ends in a tie, that point will be halved for each player.  If a team match is tied after the completion of the five singles matches, the tie will be broken by the following formula:

Compare the margin of victory of each individual match won for their team.

    Example:
    Team A Team B
    #2 won 3&1 #1 won 2&1
    #4 won 2up #3 won 4&3
    #5 halved #5 halved
    5 holes 6 holes

Since Team A’s margin of victory was 5 holes & Team B’s margin of victory was 6 holes, Team B wins the tiebreaker.

  • If a tie still exists, the team winner will be determined by comparing the number of holes remaining in each match won.

    Example:
    Team A Team B
    #2 won 3&2 #1 won 3&1
    #4 won 2&1 #3 won 2&1
    #5 halved #5 halved
    3 holes 2 holes

Team A wins because they closed out the match with more remaining holes to be played.

If a tie still exists, the team winner will be determined by comparing the halved match or matches.  These results will be determined by a “scorecard playoff” (scores will be compared with the #1 handicap hole) provided all tied matches have played that hole.  Handicap holes will be used until the tie is broken.

Rounds 3 & 4 Only

Upon arrival at the site of the championship the Games Committee will determine the procedure for tiebreakers in rounds 3 and 4 based on course and weather conditions.  It is possible that the scenario below will be used for rounds 3 and 4.  If the conditions do not allow for this scenario the Games Committee will determine the use of the above tiebreaker for rounds 3 and 4.  The Games Committee will announce their decision on this to each team at the coaches meeting Saturday, March 19.

In the event an individual match is tied at the completion of a stipulated round during rounds 3 and 4 and would affect the team result, participants will use extra holes (sudden death) to determine a winner.  These matches will start the playoff on the next hole and continue until a winner is determined.  The Games Committee will determine prior to the start of any match that is tied if time will allow for a playoff.  The Games Committee will also determine the latest time that an extra hole may begin. Should time not allow for a sudden death playoff, please refer to the tie-breaking system used for rounds 1, 2.
