First Round Complete at Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship
MARANA, Ariz. – Four double-digit seeds advanced after the first round of the Callaway Match Play Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz. Second-round matches are currently under way.

The most exciting match of the day came in the form of 12th-seeded Colorado State’s 3-2 upset of UCLA. The Bruins took the early lead with Pedro Figueiredo’s 3 and 1 victory over Ryan Peterson. Dustin Morris evened the team match with a 4 and 3 win over Connor Driscoll before the Zahkai Brown-Mario Clemens match was all square through 18 holes and entered a playoff. Each team earned an additional team point when the Rams’ Riley Arp downed Alex Shi Yup Kim, 2 and 1, and Pontus Widegren of UCLA defeated Bryce Hanstad, 3 and 2. Brown would win the 19th hole with par to secure the upset for Colorado State.

Colorado State will face Iowa, who pulled an upset of its own by edging fourth-seeded Arizona State, 3-2. Arizona State recorded the first two team points of the match with victories by James Byrne and Braxton Marquez. The Hawkeyes responded by claiming the next three matches with wins by Brad Hopfinger, Vince India and Barrett Kelpin.

Southern California was the first team to advance past the opening round, blitzing TCU, 4-1. Matthew Giles, Steve Lim and Martin Trainer claimed the first three matches while T.J. Vogel would claim the final bout. Pontas Gad scored the lone point for TCU.

Top-seeded Stanford outlasted Indiana to complete the top half of the bracket and face the Trojans in the second round. Sihwan Kim, Steve Ziegler and Steven Kearney all won for the Cardinal while Chase Wright and Brant Peaper were victories for the Hoosiers.

New Mexico notched the biggest upset of the first round after knocking off second-seeded Washington. Washington looked to be in control early after big wins by Chris Killmer and Nick Taylor. The Lobos, however, would claim the match after victories by John Catlin, Nick Geyer and Travis Ross.

New Mexico will face another double-digit seed in San Diego in round two. The Toreros downed Texas Tech. Gunner Wiebe defeated Tyler Weworski, 4 and 3, to take an early lead, but Nils Floren and Chris Ward claimed the next two to power the Red Raiders ahead. Alex Ching (2-up) and Jason Shano (1-up) both won on their final hole for the come-from-behind, 3-2 win.

Third-seeded Texas A&M defeated host-school Arizona, 3-2. The match was as back-and-forth affair with both teams notching large margins of victory before Cameron Peck closed out the win for the Aggies by downing Jonathan Khan, 2 and 1.

UNLV claimed the last match of round one by edging Middle Tennessee, 3-2. Eddie Olson put UNLV on the board first by tying a Callaway Collegiate Match Play record with an 8 and 7 victory. Jeremiah Wooding claimed the next match for the Rebels, 4 and 3, before Hunter Green earned a 2 and 1 victory for Middle Tennessee. The next two matches came to the final hole halved before Colby Smith claimed a 1-up victory to clinch the match for UNLV.
