Duke Wins Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship
BALL GROUND, Ga. – Duke continued its dominant run through the bracket, downing Illinois, 4-1, to claim the team title at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.

Austin Cody provided the first points for the Blue Devils, posting a 5 and 4 victory. Chris DeForest would respond by downing Tim Gornik, 3 and 2, to pull Illinois even in the team standings. Julian Suri claimed a 3 and 1 victory to put Duke back in the lead and Brinson Paolini clinched the win with a 2 and 1 triumph. Wes Roach closed out the scoring for the Blue Devils with a 1-up victory.

“Obviously you’ve got to go hats off to the teams that we were playing,” said Duke Head Coach Jamie Green. “They’re very good. There are no easy wins out here. At the same time, I think that says a lot about our guys because they did play hard, they played well, great practice rounds, terrific notes and they were ready for anything. It’s still about having a good plan and hitting good golf shots. You’re just counting them differently. How these guys played down the stretch, that mindset is really what you want to have every time you are playing a stroke-play event. You’re fearless out there and you’re determined and committed and I think that’s the only way they win close matches in the end. If you can do that for 54 holes and get into the top eight and play some match play (at the NCAA Championships) I like our chances. We’ve built some confidence and now the guys know what they can do.”

Duke posted a Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship record 16-3-1 mark in its individual matches. Brinson Paolini and Julian Suri both went 4-0 while Austin Cody was undefeated at 3-0-1.

Elsewhere in the bracket, Southern California claimed third place by beating Texas Tech, 4-1; Georgia Tech downed Texas A&M, 3-2, for fifth place; UCLA won the seventh-place match, 3-2, over East Tennessee State; Iowa defeated Georgia, 3-1-1, for ninth place; Pacific placed 11th after winning 4-0-1 against Alabama; South Carolina outlasted Washington State, 3-1-1 for 13th; and Texas beat Baylor, 4-1, in the 15th-place match.
