Bradenton, Fla. – First round action is complete at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Second-round matches are currently under way. Top-seeded Arkansas downed Washington State 3-2. Sebastian Cappelen, Kolton Crawford and Thomas Sorensen all won for Arkansas. The Razorbacks will face East Carolina, who defeated Iowa in the margin of victory tiebreaker six holes to five. Ryan Eibner and Eric Brady recorded 3 and 2 and 3 and 1 advantages. Iowa’s Barrett Kelpin led ECU’s Harold Varner 1-up in the final hole of the final match but Varner’s birdie on No. 18 halved the match and clinched the win for the Pirates. Oklahoma State - the fourth seed - needed a come-from-behind victory against Colorado State. Kirby Pettitt gave Colorado State an early lead after winning 1-up before Brad Gehl evened the team score with a 1-up decision of his own. Talor Gooch and Zahkai Brown halved the next match before Patrick Winther and Tanner Kesterson closed out the match for Oklahoma State with a pair of 2-up matches. Chattanooga handled host school South Florida, 4-1. Trey Valentine gave USF an early lead before the fifth-seeded Mocs claimed the final four matches. Defending champion Duke advanced after defeating Arizona State, 3.5-1.5. Julian Suri, Brinson Paolini and Austin Cody all won for the Blue Devils. Sixth-seeded Indiana will face Duke in the second round. The Hoosiers downed Kennesaw State, 3.5-1.5. Jeff Karlsson claimed the first match, 6 and 5, giving the Owls their only victory. Chase Wright, Brant Peaper and David Erdy countered with three-straight victories for Indiana. Tennessee upset seventh-seeded Liberty, 3-2. The two sides split the first four matches before Tennessee’s Jay Vandeventer parred his final hole to win 1-up. Second-seeded California advanced to the championship bracket after clipping UNCW, 3-2. UNCW picked up an early team point after Cal’s Joel Statler was unable to compete in his match. Brandon Hagy evened the match after a 9 and 7 win - the largest margin of victory in the history of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. Payne McLeod put UNCW back in the lead with a 5 and 4 victory. California closed out the match with 2 and 1 triumphs by Max Homa and Keelan Kilpatrick.
